OUR BELIEFS

The BIBLE

The Bible is God’s written Word to all people for all generations. All 66 books were written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. Because it was inspired by God, the Bible is truth without any mixture of error and is completely relevant to our lives today.  Disciples of Jesus are exhorted to study the Bible and live according to it, as it is the authoritative and normative rule and guide of all life, practice, and doctrine.  God still speaks directly through His Word today.

The TRINITY

God has existed in relationship with Himself for all eternity, therefore, He was never created.  In the unity of the godhead, He exists as one substance in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, co-existent, co-equal, and co-eternal.   Although each member of the Trinity serves different functions, they each possess equal power and authority.

The CHURCH

The Church is a local community of baptized believers unified through faith in Christ. It is not a man-made institution, but rather, a God-ordained living body that exists to worship and glorify the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  The ultimate mission of the church is to make disciples through the preaching of the gospel.  Believers are called to devote themselves to the teaching, fellowship, and sacraments of the church and to support it financially through the giving of tithes and offerings.

The FATHER

God is the Father and Creator of all heaven and earth.  By His Word and for His glory, He freely and supernaturally created the world from nothing.  He is all powerful, all knowing, ever present, unchanging, completely worthy of our trust, sovereign and holy.  It is in Him that we live, move and exist. God is good. He is our Father. He is loving, compassionate, and faithful to His people and His promises.  He created man for be in relationship with Him and intended that all creation live for His glory.

The SON

Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, completely human but, at the same time, completely divine.  He was born into this world through the Virgin, Mary.  He lived a perfect life of obedience to the Father in every way, including in His death.  Therefore, He is the only Savior for the sins of the world, having shed His blood and died on a cross in our place.  He is the only HOPE for bringing people who are far from God back into a right relationship with Him. He lived a perfect life, so that He could be a substitution for us in satisfying God’s demands for perfection. He defeated death in His resurrection so that we can have life.

The HOLY SPIRIT

The Spirit of God is the giver of life as He convicts the world of sin and turns people to righteousness.  It is through His power that people come to know Jesus and understand the gospel.  The Holy Spirit unites believers to Jesus Christ in faith, brings about the new birth, and dwells within the regenerate. The Holy Spirit has come to glorify the Son, who in turn came to glorify the Father. He will lead the Church into a right understanding and rich application of the truth of God’s Word. He is to be respected, honored, and worshiped as God the Third Person of the Trinity. He guides believers into all truth and exalts Christ. He comforts us, gives us spiritual gifts, and makes us more like Christ.  The Holy Spirit further empowers the church with spiritual gifts which are to be used with love and humility to build up the church and minister to people. Being indwelt by the Spirit and being filled with the Spirit are theologically distinct experiences. The Holy Spirit desires to fill each believer continually with increased power for Christian life and witness, and imparts His supernatural gifts for the edification of the Body and for various works of ministry in the world.

MAN

God created men and women in the image of God and are the supreme object of His creation. We were created to have fellowship with God but became separated in that relationship through sinful disobedience and rebellion.  As a result, we cannot attain a right relationship with God through our own effort. This means that we are fallen, sinful people, inwardly depraved and have no hope of returning to God apart from a special work of grace.  Further, every human being is uniquely created, possesses dignity, and is worthy of respect and Christian love.

SALVATION

We are absolutely lost and without hope apart from the salvation provided through the blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, which provides the only way of salvation and forgiveness of sin.  Jesus is the only mediator between God and men.  There is no other way of salvation.  Salvation occurs when people place their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment for their sin. Salvation is a gift from God, and it cannot be earned through our own efforts.  This is called the gospel, or the “good news” that brings hope to the nations.  Everyone needs to hear this “good news” in order to be saved from their own wretchedness.  The good news is that anyone can become a Christian and come into an eternal relationship with God.  Our response to this gospel is rooted and grounded in the free and unconditional election of god for His own pleasure and glory.  All who claim this salvation will bear fruit through changed lives and evidenced by kingdom service or works.  Jesus calls all peoples to be His disciples and to follow after Him.

OUR HISTORY

In May, 2015, CityLight Seoul launched its first service in partnership with a Korean Ministry.

After almost two years of growing together, in February, 2017, CityLight became an independent church with a vision to serve the Sinchon region and to raise people to preach the gospel to the nations.
